Millwall FC and Bacon’s college have put pen to paper in an exciting new programme aimed at developing footballers along with studying academic qualifications.

The programme will run at Bacon’s college site and is aimed at Post 16 male and female students. The academy programme is a mix of high quality football coaching and training along with a bespoke academic pathway.

The Millwall FC Post 16 Academy is open to talented footballers aged between 16-18 years, and is a must for any football enthusiast. A playing trial is required, as places will be offered based on playing ability. The students will have a choice of the full range of Sixth Form qualifications including “A levels and BTECS which are on offer at the Bacon’s college where they will study as fully integrated sixth form students.

Millwall FC welcomes the partnership, and sees this as a major extension to its development of setting up education and football related programmes.

Millwall Community Trust CEO Sean Daly said: “We are excited about the prospect of working with Bacon’s college and developing a Post 16 education and football academy in the area, and its great we can now offer A levels as part of education provision. The football related element of the programme will help develop students’ leadership and coaching skills, as well as increasing their knowledge of sports injury management and many other subject areas related to sport and the gaining of a professional coaching qualification”.

Chris Pyke Head of PE at Bacon. college said: “This is an exciting partnership for Bacon’s; we are always keen to ensure our students have an interesting and engaging curriculum with depth. The Post 16 football academy provides a great opportunity for students to reach their full potential both academically and within the wider world of sport and specifically football.”

All 16 - 19 students at Bacon’s are given the opportunity to take a study programme which reflects their prior attainment, education and career goals. Students are expected to meet a set of entry requirements that indicate their ability to access the curriculum offer at 16-19 which is primarily comprised of academic A-Levels with a small vocational offer focusing on IT, Media, Sport and Business. Students are guided through the process of choosing their subjects through a range of assemblies, information and an Open Evening which outlines what students can study, the entry requirements, complementary subjects and the potential career pathways available to them.

Students in Bacon’s College Sixth Form primarily follow academic study programmes, selecting up to four A-Levels to study in Year 12, with the majority focusing on three A-Levels in Year 13. Every student is given an individualised guidance meeting regarding their suitability for their subject choices before they complete enrolment and all students are closely matched to their abilities and interests in these discussions.
