Millwall Community Trust (MCT) would like to welcome our new Premier League Primary Stars and Schools Coordinator, Emily Poole.
Premier League Primary Stars is a national curriculum-linked education programme using the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.
MCT will be running the programme in local schools after the summer holiday.
We had a quick catch-up with Emily to find out about her role and what she’s most excited about.
You’ve recently joined on as our Premier League Primary Stars and Schools Coordinator, can you tell us a bit about yourself and what made you want this role?
My name’s Emily Poole, I’m 23 years old, and I’m excited to start my role here.
I’ve been doing P.E teaching and football coaching for the past 10 years. I started volunteering on programmes at 13 years old. I moved onto football coaching from the age of 16 through Primary schools and companies. At around 18 I went to university, and I was working for a company providing P.E teaching. I done my degree in sports and physical education. I finished that about 2 years ago.
I’ve done plenty of stuff to do with football coaching and PE teaching.
What will you be doing with the kids on this programme?
With the Primary Stars programme, I will be teaching, but it’s more about how I can help children, through sports, to improve their Maths and English. So, it would be different ways of how I can show them how to learn through PE, not necessarily just how to throw a ball and catch a ball, but also learn their ABCs and 1,2,3s for example.
It actually links in really well with each other because there’s so many different games you can play that will involve Maths and English and they won’t even realise that they’re actually learning. They’ll think ‘oh we’re having fun playing basketball, or we’re playing football’ and not realise.
What are you most looking forward to in your new role?
It’s a new challenge for me. As much as I’ve taught PE, I haven’t done it in a way that incorporates the kids learning Maths and English, so it’ll be a new challenge for me to conquer. I also already love working with children, and I can’t wait to grow the programme.
