As part of National Careers Week, taking place from 2–7 March, the EFL is proud to highlight the life-changing work taking place across the English Football League network, where clubs are making a real difference beyond the pitch.

In south London, the Millwall Community Trustcontinues to make a meaningful difference in the local community through its Millwall Employability Hub. The Hub offers free Employability and Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) support to unemployed individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

Participants benefit from one-to-one mentoring, weekly pre-employability Bootcamps, industry workshops, job fairs, recruitment events, and access to training and education — all designed to build confidence, develop skills and create pathways into work.

One recent success story is Lisa Nti, a graduate who was struggling to break into the competitive marketing sector due to a lack of experience. Referred to the Hub by her Jobcentre Plus coach in Peckham, Lisa began her journey by attending a CV workshop, where she gained valuable insight into what employers look for in a strong application.

Following this, Lisa had a one-to-one session with Employability Mentor John Scarborough, where she shared her ambition to pursue a career in marketing and social media. Recognising her passion and potential, John introduced her to Kai Bennett, Media Officer at Millwall Community Trust, creating an opportunity for Lisa to undertake work shadowing within the organisation’s media team.

Since then, Lisa has been working closely with Kai, developing her media skills and gaining hands-on industry experience. She is now contributing to matchday coverage for the Millwall Lionesses, strengthening her portfolio and building the practical experience she had previously found difficult to access.

Lisa said: “After graduating, I struggled to find employment in marketing due to a lack of experience. When I was told about the opportunity at Millwall Community Trust, I was pleased — it’s exactly the kind of experience employers are looking for.”

Kai Bennett praised Lisa’s development: “Lisa is a pleasure to work with. I’ve seen clear improvement in her work and look forward to continuing our collaboration.”

Ophelie Zahui, Employability Mentor at the Trust, added: “Lisa has shown great dedication since joining the Trust. It’s been a joy to watch her grow.”

Genevieve Campbell, Lisa’s Jobcentre Plus coach, said: “Lisa is tenacious and committed. Despite setbacks, she’s embraced every opportunity to pursue her goal. I believe she has the acumen and work ethic to succeed.”

Lisa’s story highlights the impact of tailored employability support and the vital role that community programmes can play in helping individuals overcome barriers and achieve their career ambitions.
