Millwall’s Post-16 team lost 2-0 against Colchester United at the JobServe Community Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The young Lions’ headed into the match on the back of five straight wins but were unable to make it six today.
Millwall beat the U’s last Wednesday - winning 3-1 at St Paul’s - so the hosts came into this one looking for revenge.
Stuart McFadyen’s side started well, controlling possession and looking to dominate the chances.
Chances started to flow and with twenty minutes on the clock David found Mathias with a lovely pass who’s cross found Israel but his strike was saved well by the keeper.
Colchester took the lead two minutes later after a neat cutback and cross was tapped home.
Millwall kept going and after the restart they threatened to equalise, with efforts on goal coming in. Colchester’s defence were able to stand firm and withstand the pressure being thrown at them.
They then got their rewards for their defending - a quick counter attack and smart finish - doubling their lead just before the hour mark.
Millwall pushed and pushed for a route back into the game but it wouldn’t come and Colchester emerged with all three points.
Stuart McFadyen, Millwall’s Post-16 Manager said: “I thought the performance was a bit too flat, we didn’t have much quality in the final third.
“We lacked a bit of desire on the ball, forward runs, forward passes and crosses into the box.
“Colchester held their shape well in a mid-block, they were very direct and used their pace up front and in the wide areas and took their chances well.”
